Hello Chong An Sunim.

I am a lay person who have been studying and practicing Buddhism for years
following teachings of you, Master Seung Sahn, and other great minds.
I joined here 2 weeks ago because I happened to get a question to ask you.
It is about Rohingya crisis.

This is not a 'What is this' matter, nor 'How may I help you' one I suppose.
But when I read this case, I felt I need to seek higher mind's view on it
because in this horrible massacre Buddhist tradition is tragically involved.

I found that there are quite complicated issues in this matter.
However I believe, if things near ethnic cleansing had happened,
they shouldn't have been done by hands of Buddhists, especially never by hands of Buddhist monks.
And, at least, if these things had already happened, master minds of Buddhist community there
should have stopped these acts and voiced out urging political leaders to stop them.
But none of these were the case. They closed their eyes and just let it happen.
The hIghest political leader is even trying not to upset these sentiments, and as a result it disappointed world deeply.

Why is it like this? What are all Buddhist teachings and traditions for, if things go this way?
It is a country of which 90% of population there are in Buddhist tradition.
I tried to see this from aspects such as its Theravada tradition, or collective karma, but none were enough.
As far as I know, these horrible acts are rather more strictly prohibited in its tradition than in any others.
So I come here to seek your view, facing an unexpected example of Buddhism's failure as working power to bring insight to society.

I have a couple of personal reasons for this asking.
First, I recommend Buddhist teachings to others who are in despair and need of spiritual guidance.
We as Korean have also been seeing many cases of vices done by corrupted monks of Jogye and other branches of Buddhism.
Still I could carefully do recommendation because they seem to be personal level and not totally anti-humanity.
Rohingya massacre though confuses me quite a bit to the extent that it makes me wonder if I might be able to keep doing it.
Second, as an imperfect one, I keep observing my half colored ox and trying to curb it, by trying not to lose right this moment.
But I got doubt if I can really get near to what all Buddhas point, when trained minds fail.

Please excuse both my unclear mind and English.

Hello,

Thank you for your question. What you are asking about is exactly a 'What is this?' and 'How may I help you?' matter. Cause and effect are very clear, but very few people understand what they should do with it. As an illsutration, let me quote the Sixth Patriarch:

Original Face

The Sixth Patriarch was once pursued by the monk Hae Myung. Seeing him coming, the Patriarch laid his robe and bowl on a stone, saying, “This robe symbolizes faith: how can it be fought over? I leave it to you to take it.”

Hae Myung tried to pick up the robe, but it was as immovable as a mountain. He became terrified and hesitated, crying, “I have come for the Dharma, not for the robe. I beg you, please teach me, layman brother!”

The Sixth Patriarch said, “Don’t make ‘good’ and ‘bad’! At that time, what is Hae Myung’s original face?” Hae Myung was instantly enlightened.

In tears, his entire body dripping with sweat, he bowed and asked, “Besides these secret words and meanings, is there more secret meaning?”

“What I have just told you is not secret,” the Patriarch replied. “If you perceive the face of your true self, then that which is secret, you already have.”

Hae Myung said, “Although at Hwang Mae Mountain I followed other monks in training, I could not understand my original face. Now, thanks to your teaching, which is clear and to the point, my understanding is like drinking water: I understand myself whether it is warm or cold. So now you are my teacher.”

“If you are already like this,” the Patriarch said, “then you and I are both students of the Fifth Patriarch. Take care of your true self. Only go straight!”

Questions

1. Don’t make ‘good’ and ‘bad’. What is your original face?
2. What did Hae Myung attain?
3. What is the secret you already have?
4. What is the meaning of ‘only go straight’?

Commentary
The Sixth Patriarch has two eyes; Hae Myung has two ears. Each has one mouth. Together they see and hear, but their speech is different. One goes north, the other goes south.

I hope this helps you find your situation, your relationship and your correct function in this world.
